Nsure Renewables, specialist insurance brokers to the renewable energy industry, have looked to the Met Office to use its expertise as a world leading provider of weather and climate services to help companies manage the impacts of low wind.
A new service from the Met Office called Site Wind Index provides 30 years of climatology data detailing hourly wind speeds for specific sites and heights which is updated monthly and annually. It offers a consistent dataset for setting boundaries of high and low wind at any location, and therefore providing a baseline for setting low wind insurance contracts.
Alasdair Skea, Met Office Renewables Applications team manager, said: "Low wind insurance contracts need a consistent, reliable, accurate and prompt way of setting boundaries and settling claims. By using our in-house data and modelling, underpinned by our world class science, Site Wind Index provides long-term consistency for the duration of contracts, so customers can feel completely confident in the consistency of the data they will be provided."
Site Wind Index is available in the UK and across Europe and can be used at onshore and offshore locations.
